RESEARCH AND WORK

After a degree in Computer Science from the University of Milan, I spent a brief period at the IBM T.J. Watson Research Center and the Department of Molecular Biology of Princeton University.

Then, after a year at ST Microelectronics in Italy, I started my scientific career doing a doctorate in Scientific Computing at the University of Cologne in Germany.

After that, and before initiating the current appointment at the National Research Council of Italy, I was a one-year post-doc at the Department of Computer Science of the University "La Sapienza" in Rome, a four-months visiting scholar at the System Biology Department of the Harvard Medical School in Boston and a one-year post-doc at the Institute for Medical Bio-Mathematics in Tel Aviv. In 2018 I was research fellow at the Institute for Advanced Studies (IAS) of the University of Amsterdam.

My research interests range from the study of complex systems in general to the modeling of biological systems with particular interest in the immune system and related pathologies. I am also interested in Machine Learning applied to Medicine and Biology.

I have coauthored one book, edited another and coauthored more than 120 peer-reviewed research papers among journals, books and conference proceedings.

I have been involved as principal investigator in two EU-funded projects of the ICT for Health of the 6th Framework Programme (FP6) and I have coordinated the project MISSION-T2D of the FP7. Currently I am serving as work package leader of the H2020 project iPC, I am coordinating the JPI-AMR project MAGIcIAN and I are principal investigator and task leader of the IMI2 project ERA4TB.

I have been Adjunct Professor for the academic year 2017-2018 at the University LUISS Guido Carli, teaching Information Systems.

Since 2015 I have been Adjunct Professor at the Department of Mathematics and Physics of the University of Roma Tre, teaching the subjects Machine Laarning and Computational Biology.

EDITORIAL BOARDS, COMMITTEES MEMBERS, AND OTHER ACTIVITIES

I have served as Program Committee member for a number of international conferences in the field of Computer Science and Systems Biology.

I am Editorial Board Member of PLoS One and Computational and Mathematical Methods in Medicine.

I was Section Editor of the chapter  Agent based modeling and simulation of Springer's Encyclopedia of Complexity and System Science.

I have served as referee for a number of Oxford Journals, IEEE, Springer-Verlag and Elsevier journals and for conferences of  the IEEE society.

During FP7, I have been employed as expert evaluator by the European Community in the evaluation of proposals and monitoring of projects of the objectives of ICT for Health theme. I have been involved in the evaluation of several project proposals from internation public and private research agencies.
