Wireless networks

&
computer security

In the past I studied wireless networks with special attention to the problems of interoperability among heterogeneous networks (e.g., 802.11 and GPRS/UMTS. More recently I focused on the management of large scale wireless networks. This activity is in collaboration mainly with Giulio Iannello, Filippo Cacace and Luca Vollero of the University Campus Bio Medico (Rome). One of our main results is the development of OpenCapwap, the first open source implementation of the Capwap protocol.

I have been interested in computer security since my days in IBM. In collaboration with some students of mine and Luigi Mancini we developed REMUS, a solution to confine root-privileged and setuid processes by mediating their use of security-relevant system calls.

Another activity (more related to computer forensics) is the consultancy and training that I carry out for the Italian Police and the “Arma dei Carabinieri” in collaboration with Pino Italiano.

A more recent entry among my activities is the development of Virtual Parent, a software solution, sponsored by FILAS, to help parents in monitoring the chat sessions of their children.
